Top 5 Foundations for Combination Skin

If you have combination skin, you know the struggle of finding a foundation that not only mattifies your skin, but keeps it from looking cakey or clinging to dry patches.

These are my top 5 foundations for combination skin, in order of preference.

From left to right – Urban Decay Naked Skin in 0.5; Tarte Rainforest of the Sea in Fair Beige; Cover Girl Matte BB Cream in 510 Fair; Estee Lauder Double Wear in 1N1 Ivory Nude; Maybelline Better Skin in 10 Porcelain Ivory

1. Maybelline Superstay Better Skin

This stuff is amazing. Not only does it last on my face all day, it keeps me from looking oily or dry. I can wear it the entire day, and I’m talking a full 12+ hour day, with barely any touch ups. For me, this is almost unheard of. I wear the shade 10 Porcelain Ivory, the perfect shade for my pale skin. This is my go-to foundation for everyday wear, not only because it’s affordable but because it works so well. It’s medium to full coverage (very buildable), but looks so natural – my freckles poke through when I wear this! This foundation is my holy grail, hands down.

2. Estee Lauder Double Wear

This is the only foundation I’ve ever tried that will last through almost anything – sweat, humidity, water, you name it. This stuff is super heavy duty – to take it off, you need about 3 makeup wipes and some intense cleanser. While it isn’t a waterproof foundation, it’s about as close to it as a foundation can be. This is the foundation I turn to when I’m going to be outside for long hours in the summer (with sunscreen underneath – of course!), or when I know I need something that won’t let me down. It’s full coverage, lasts the entire day (you could go a whole 24 hours with this stuff), and has a beautiful matte finish. I could see this working really well even on extremely oily skin!

3. Cover Girl Matte BB Cream

This is another great drugstore find. While it’s a BB cream, it’s medium coverage and lasts for about 6-8 hours without touch ups. This is similar to the Estee Lauder foundation, just not with as much staying power. The only real issue I have with this line is the shade range – as you can see in the swatches above, it’s much darker than the rest. Being the lightest shade in the line, it’s far too dark for anyone with my skin tone or lighter. I have to mix in my Body Shop drops with this in order for it to work. Overall though, this stuff works extremely well.

4. Tarte Rainforest of the Sea

My favourite thing about this foundation is the shade range – they have a shade that goes even lighter than the one I use, which is crazy since that rarely happens. While this foundation is light to medium coverage, I love it for the winter when I’m a little less oily and more dry. It lasts about 5-7 hours, and is extremely natural looking. I’ve actually been asked if I was wearing foundation while wearing this a few times, it’s that natural! It’s a water based foundation, so it’s very hydrating but also has great staying power and doesn’t slip around on my face. It’s one of those foundations that just balances everything out!

5. Urban Decay Naked Skin

This is another foundation with a great shade range – brands are really stepping up their game! One thing I love about this foundation is that it really looks like you’re not wearing makeup, similar to the Rainforest of the Sea. It provides great coverage and staying power without looking cakey or thick. This one is similar in wear and look to the Tarte one, ranging from 5-7 hours of no touch ups. One downside to this foundation is that it rubs off around the nose after about 5 hours, so I tend to only use this foundation if I know I’m not wearing it for the entire day.

And that’s my list! Let me know if you have any holy grail foundations for your skin type, or if you’ve tried any of these listed above.
